Tudo o que você precisa saber sobre o TOEFL

Everything you need to know about TOEFL

The TOEFL is one of the most popular proficiency exams in the world, being accepted by more than 11,000 universities and institutions present in more than 160 countries.

In recent years, the TOEFLs categories have evolved to be closer to different realities. That's why in today's post we've prepared a super complete material explaining everything you need to know about the TOEFL.

Knowing a little more about TOEFL

As we've seen in several posts, TOEFL is the acronym for Test of English as a Foreign Language. In other words, as the name reveals, it is an English language proficiency exam for foreigners.

Among the proficiency exams, it is one of the most traditional. In this way, the TOEFL attests whether a person can express himself in the language and understand it in its entirety.

As with the other exams, the TOEFL is a standardized test built with minimum requirements to verify if a student is suitable for a specific context involving the English language, evaluating their ability to understand and apply the language. In general, the exam can take up to 4 hours (depending on the category).

The exam comprises 4 basic requirements:

  • listening (oral interpretation);
  • reading (text interpretation);
  • writing (writing);
  • speaking (fluency and diction).

In addition, the TOEFL can currently be divided into five major modalities, which are:

Let's understand a little more about some of these modalities.

TOEFL IBT and TOEFL ITP: main differences

It is very common when a person begins to understand about proficiency certifications, to be in doubt: TOEFL IBT or TOEFL ITP?

TOEFL IBT (Internet-Based Test) is a robust and thorough exam that assesses the following skills:

  • Listening;
  • Reading;
  • Speaking;
  • Writing.

In other words, in general, the TOEFL IBT is for the fluent level in English. The duration of its application is, on average, 3h30min, with a maximum score of 120 points.

Each University establishes the minimum grade required, either for the total grade of the exam or the minimum grade per section. Therefore, it is important to check the criteria of each institution.

The TOEFL ITP (Iinstitutional Test Program) comprises only three sections:

  • Listening comprehension (35 minutes);
  • Reading comprehension (55 minutes);
  • Language structure (25 minutes).

All these sections have multiple choice questions, with the total exam duration being about two hours. However, it is important to point out that, unlike the TOEFL IBT, the TOEFL ITP does not have the Writing and Speaking sections.

In addition, the TOEFL ITP is applied at two different levels (source: ATS):

  • Level 1: the test has a higher level of demand;
  • Level 2: here, the requirement level is more basic.

TOEFL Essentials: how does it work?

The test TOEFL Essentials was developed to bring big impacts within the proficiency exams: together with the TOEFL iBT testEssentials has become one of the most important in the category.

The aim of Essentials is to examine English proficiency in a wider range of environments beyond just the university environment. As such, it is comprised of 50% of academic content and 50% of General English. Plus, it's much more affordable (it costs $100).

Another feature of Essentials is that it includes a variety of accents and situations from around the world, thus offering a more global character.

In this way, Essentials aims to be shorter. Thus, its duration is up to 90 minutes. Another feature is that the questions are defined according to the student's performance throughout the test.

Essentials is also divided into four sections:

  • Listening;
  • Reading;
  • Writing;
  • Speaking.

How to do Essentials?

To perform this new exam, it is necessary to have a desktop or notebook with an appropriate operating system, browser, speaker, microphone and camera.

In addition, another fundamental detail: it is mandatory that the candidate is alone and in a quiet and quiet place.

Simulated: how does this study strategy work?

The simulation is one of the most important activities in the preparation strategy for a proficiency test, as is the case of the TOEFL.

But why is the simulation so important? THE simulated it is important because it helps in the tripod for a good test or test result, that is, it helps in the matter of knowledge, calm and confidence. In addition, the simulation helps because it is possible to verify the types of questions in which the student hits and/or misses the most. And this information is essential as one of the guides for a more efficient study.

With regard to calm and confidence, the benefits of the simulation are indirect. For example, when taking a mock test, the student experiences to some degree the same sensation as when taking the proficiency test. With that, on the day of the real test, he will have a greater control of his emotions.

In addition to the questions having been adapted according to the student's performance, there is the preparation of an individual performance report so that it is clear to understand what the strengths and points of improvement are.

That is, what the student needs to focus on to have an even better result at the time of the "real test". And all this within each of the 4 (four) skills charged in the TOEFL proficiency test.
