Who is it for planning to study abroad, you have probably come across acronyms like TOEFL IBT and TOEFL ITP, right ?! And here comes the doubts: what do these acronyms mean? Which exam should I prioritize? Which of these tests is the most common where I intend to study?

To help you understand the main differences, in today's post we will bring you a little about TOEFL IBT and TOEFL ITP. Let´s go?!

TOEFL IBT and TOEFL ITP: main differences

We have already seen that TOEFL is the acronym for Test of English as a Foreign Language. In other words, an English proficiency exam for foreigners.

TOEFL IBT

TOEFL IBT (Internet-Based Test) is a robust and thorough exam that assesses the following skills:

  • Listening;
  • Reading;
  • Speaking;
  • Writing.

That is, in general, the TOEFL IBT is for the level fluent in English. The duration of its application is, on average, 3h30min.

The maximum TOEFL IBT score is 120 points, divided by the four sections (each is worth up to 30 points).

Each University establishes the minimum grade required, either for the total exam grade or the minimum grade per section.

Therefore, it is important to check the criteria of the institution you are interested in.

TOEFL ITP

The TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) comprises three sections:

  • Listening comprehension (35 minutes);
  • Reading comprehension (55 minutes);
  • Language structure (25 minutes).

All of these sections have multiple choice questions, with the total duration of the exam being approximately two hours.

Unlike TOEFL IBT, TOEFL ITP does not have the Writing and Speaking sections.

In addition, the TOEFL ITP is applied at two different levels (source: ATS):

  • Level 1: the test has a higher level of demand;
  • Level 2: here, the level of demand is more basic;

Which exam should I take?

As we said earlier, there is no rule. Each institution determines which exam will be used in the candidate selection phase, as well as other determinations.

In general, English-speaking Universities require the TOEFL IBT. In addition, TOEFL IBT has wide international acceptance.

TOEFL ITP is usually requested for short courses.

The important thing is to choose where you intend to study and check what type of exam is requested. Focus on your studies and… have a good trip
