Proficiency Exam: What is it for?

Before we explain the differences between the iTEP and TOEFL proficiency exams, it is important to understand what a proficiency test is, after all.

O Portuguese online dictionary explains that the word “proficiency” is related to mastery of a certain subject. For example, one of the synonyms for proficiency is competence.

When referring to languages, the proficiency exam aims to assess, in a standardized way, whether a given individual is proficient in that language or not. That is, if there is the domain and what is its level (level).

Thus, the great essence of proficiency tests (such as iTEP and TOEFL) is to test the student's ability in several essential skills to master a language, such as:

  • Reading;
  • writing;
