What is TOEFL?
TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, and is the most well-known and respected English proficiency exam in the world. It is recognized by more than nine thousand higher education institutions, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries.
That is: if you want to study at a university abroad, you must take this exam.
The test assesses your ability to understand and apply the English language in an academic context.
The exam comprises 4 requirements:
1. listening (oral interpretation);
2. reading (text interpretation);
4. speaking (fluency and diction).
How is the proof?
The test has two types of test applications: TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP.
It is important to note that two other types, TOEFL PBT (Paper-based-testing) and TOEFL CBT (Computer-based-testing), are no longer applied in Brazil and Latin America since 2013.
TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test)
The exam is carried out via the internet and assesses the ability to use and understand the English language at the university level.
There is a combination, at all times, of the following skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Remembering that all content is geared towards the academic environment. Therefore, the exam presents different passages of students' daily lives at a university, as well as theoretical classes.
TOEFL ITP (Institutional Test Program)
It is a simplified form of the TOEFL iBT. It is not much requested by educational institutions abroad, but for Brazilian programs such as Science without Borders, it is accepted in applications for some countries.
The content and its questions are similar to that of a Brazilian high school exam, for example. Listening and reading comprehension are evaluated.
